Furnace Filters

Furnace filters are one of the most important parts of your HVAC system. They keep your system component clean and running efficiently. A dirty filter can lead to higher utility bills, expensive repairs and shortened equipment life. Here are a few filter tips to help you know when and how to change your furnace filters.

Change the filter regularly

Many customers ask how often they should change their filter. All systems are different and some filters have more capacity than others. You should monitor your filter and change it when you can see a visible buildup of dirt and dust. Change the filter at least every 6 months.

Buy the right filter

Make sure that you buy the right size so that your filter fits properly. If the filter is loose, it will allow air to bypass and get your system dirty.
Don’t buy the cheapest filter off the shelf. A pleated filter is much more efficient and will extend the life of your system more than a cheap fiberglass filter.

Install the filter properly

Not sure which direction to install the filter? The airflow arrows should always point toward the furnace (or blower fan). Installing filters backwards could lead to them “blowing out.”
